For my research topic I've decided to evaluate the effectiveness of help/user guide feature for Dorico Pro, which is a professional music notation program from the company Steinberg. I found that, while collecting possible sources, getting a understanding of the underlying principles will be key to formulating a strong research plan.
Here are a few sources that seem relevant and credible.

Has human factors and usability lost its mojo?
-P Kortum, Journal of Usability Studies, Vol. 12 Issue 2
There is a possible imbalance of sources because the Journal of Technical Writing and Communication seems to cover the topic more than others. Almost all my sources are journal articles, so including other types of information or data could be helpful. There is a possibility in user experience/design being an under-represented topic in the research. Finding research relating to digital communication and technology needs more attention. Verifying the knowledge in these gaps, where possible, can create a better foundation to write a proposal and design a primary research plan on the topic.
